Chapter Thirty-Four
Regan ordered for Tookie to be brought up on the screen, and within moments his large face was there. His disgusting tongue took up a large chunk of the video feed.
âI trust ya got my message!â Tookie said.
âI did,â Regan replied. âThank you for your help. We communicated with Salvato, and⦠Well⦠Heâs headed your way.â
Tookieâs eyes lit up with anger and fear. He was clearly displeased with this news, but wasnât sure how to respond.
âLet me clarify,â Regan said. âIt wonât be Salvato himself, but some of his goons.â
âSo why send them to me?â Tookie asked.
âJust to keep ahead of the game a bit,â Regan said. âContact us when they get there. We just have a few things to figure out on our end first.â
Tookie nodded reluctantly.
âTookie,â Regan said before the two hung up. âThey want something that we have. This has nothing to do with you.â
âI told you how to get a hold of that crazy mobster!â Tookie said. âWhatever youâre into, Iâm in it now too. Itâs still not as bad as anything Slobbers would have done to me. Did you know he likes to eat his victims alive?â
âCanât say I did.â
âAnd he takes a week to digest his meals. Iâd rather deal with mob business than that. Iâll stand by and if something changes on my end, Iâll call you.â
Tookie disappeared from the screen. Regan knew he had dragged Tookie into their mess, but he shook it off. He would make it work.
Then Calico spoke up.
âI know youâre all against me on this, but I think we need to consider taking the cube to the Universal Council,â she began. âThere is so much corruption that would be uncovered, and we could seek asylum with them for safety until it blows over.â
âBut some of that corruption is within the Universal Council itself,â Arkei argued. âTheyâd probably just make us disappear along with the evidence. Itâs better nobody knows we have this cube, at least for now.â
âIâm inclined to agree with Arkei,â Straya said. âWhy would they let a bunch of renegades like us walk in and dismantle the governing fabric of the universe?â
Regan was torn on how to play his next move. This situation was indeed a dangerous one, a battle of wits more than a battle of strength. He had to outsmart many players here.
The bottom line was, he didnât care about uncovering any corruption, considering he himself was an illegal species in space. In his mind, he was as illegal as anything else going on, and the only way to maintain this lifestyle was to stay under the radar. And storming the Universal Councilâs door down with accusations of corruption was definitely not the way to keep a low profile.
âWe could have someone else deliver the cube for us,â Regan said. âA courier of some type, to get this thing out of our hands. Thatâs all I want, for this device to no longer be our problem.â
âOr we could just run away,â Reverie suggested. âWe could sail off toward some uncharted system and not have to worry about anything else again.
